I asked my butcher, Chris Hayman Butchers, for some really meaty ribs. “Leave the belly on but remove the rind” I said. Well I certainly got what I asked for because this slab was absolutely huge! I considered trimming it down but then decided to just go for it and cook the whole thing. I was excited to see how this would turn out. Can never have too much meat right? I had some new rubs and sauces from the fantastic local company Brybeque to try out so I thought I would give those a go.Continue reading Brybeque Rubbed Pork Ribs/Belly
So the weekend of the 15th and 16th of September I was lucky enough to visit Abergavenny Food Festival for the first time. I’ve been meaning to go for years. Even getting the opportunity to go with a press pass last year but not being able to go due to work commitments. Finally getting to go was very exciting. I couldn’t wait to try as much food as possible and see some fantastic demos by some top chefs/cooks. Obviously I was most excited about the outdoor cooking elements and BBQ but there was loads more to see and taste. In this blog I’ll go through all of the food I tried with you and describing it the best I can. I’ll also tell you all you need to know about the demos I visited. Here goes!Continue reading Abergavenny Food Festival
This isn’t breaking news. I’m certain that many of you already know but I am still thrilled to share this news with you. Anybody that has read my blog would know that Hang Fire Smokehouse are incredible. They were voted ‘Best Street Food’ by the BBC, launched Wales’ first craft soda and obviously cook the most incredible Barbecue food – you should do anything they can to go and eat their food. However, I realise that this is not always possible and so the announcement that they are releasing their very own cookbook is incredibly exciting. Now you can cook their food at home! Continue reading Hang Fire Smokehouse Announce Cookbook Deal!

Recently, I haven’t posted many reviews to this blog. For a number of reasons, mainly that I am busy doing the same stuff I do most days and because I usually have to wait until payday before I can afford to eat out. I have been trying to find more businesses to review from in and around my area. I hoped to go out last weekend and find something really good. Something that would excite my readers and although I believe I did find something really brilliant with Elm Tree Pies and The Cherry Tree, it certainly was not Retro Diner. This is my ‘review’ of Retro Diner in Abergavenny.
This will be the first negative review I have written. I almost don’t want to post it but for what purpose? Even the Twitter page says, “Trying everything once and telling you all about it. Good or bad!”. I would only be doing you a disservice by not telling you about my disappointing experience. Continue reading Retro Diner: Abergavenny
Recently I had a rather extraordinary trip to Abergavenny with my daughter. Unusually, it was a very bright and sunny day and I was definitely in the mood to find something great for you guys. Unfortunately, one of my discoveries was very disappointing. The other two turned out to be pretty great and in this post I am going to tell you about The Cherry Tree. Continue reading The Cherry Tree: Jams, Chutneys and Curds.
Last weekend I found myself wandering around Abergavenny with my daughter. Shopping, soaking up the sun (surprisingly) and looking for something I might be able to talk about on this blog. I ended up with a few things to talk about. One bad experience but also one or two brilliant discoveries. Elm Tree Foods pies being one of them! Continue reading Elm Tree Foods: Pies
I know that everyone is busy during the week and many of you might not get to check your social media accounts until the weekend. This is why I have created this ‘Sunday Round Up’ so that you will never have to miss a blog again!
This is not the type of food that I will normally ‘review’ on this blog. However, if I feel as though something I eat is worth the mention I will definitely tell you about it. What might surprise you is the fact Nicholls, Abergavenny is actually a shop selling good quality jewellery, clothing and homeware. The website describes the space at the back serving food as a ‘Coffee Shop’. It is not open evenings but with a decent sized menu serving very good quality food it is not like any other Coffee Shop I have visited.
