Porky’s Pizzeria, Pontypool: ‘You Must Be Smoking’

This is a review I have been excited about posting. First of all because it’s a pizzeria in my home town but also because the pizzas are great!

I live in a town called Pontypool, in South Wales.  As you would expect, there is no street food or barbecue and a limited number of restaurants.  Top quality restaurants in particular are rare.  We do have a great market, Pontypool Indoor Market, home to some great butchers etc but that is it.  Recently I have wanted to blog about whats on offer locally and this is one of many posts I hope to publish spreading the word about local events or business.

One of my favourite places to order pizza is Porky’s Pizzeria in Pontypool.  Now I know you are probably thinking that they are just another kebab shop or sub standard pizza place but I don’t believe that is true.  2015 will be their 28th year in business and their popularity in the area is a testament to the quality of their food.  They are open most of the day for lunch, offering sandwiches, baguettes, paninis etc and then later in the evening… Pizza!  Regular or Skinny, hand spun bases with a fairly large selection of toppings.

Here is the main menu.

I think the first thing I would like to point out is that the menu is not expensive.  Particularly in comparison to some of the bigger chains.  I find that with most independent pizza places you get a lot more for your money.  The quality also far superior the larger chains.

I ordered the ‘You Must Be Smoking’ (for me) with the optional free extra of garlic and herbs, the ‘Cheese & Tomato’ (for my daughter) and the ‘Porky’s 6 of the Best’  (to share).

The ‘You Must Be Smoking’ pizza has a bbq sauce base topped with smoked cheese, regular cheese, bacon, pepperoni and garlic sausage.

I couldn’t really describe in enough words how good this pizza was!  The base in particular was light and fluffy.  Many of the pizzas you would get from less reputable pizza places are very dense and I struggle to eat much of it at all.  The bbq sauce and the smoked cheese is a great combination and something that I really enjoy.  They don’t over do it on the ingredients either which can happen in other places.  As always, quality is far more important that quantity.

The ‘Cheese & Tomato’ pizza was also great.  Topped with a rich tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.

My daughter is happy with something simple like this but the pizza was still up to the same standard as ‘You Must Be Smoking’.  The base was light and fluffy, I would have no problem ordering this for myself.

Last of all we had the ‘Porky’s 6 of the Best’ to share.  This is what you get.

1. Four Tasty Buffalo Wings

2. Four Breaded Onion Rings

3. Two Crusty Garlic Bread Slices

4. A Portion of Potato Wedges/Chips

5. A Tub of Fresh Coleslaw

6. A Dip of your Choice.

I chose the chips and the dip of my choice was the garlic dip.

The contents of this box didn’t excite me as much as the pizza.  Everything in it was good but not at the same level as the pizza.  The best part was definitely the wings.  Although they weren’t packed with any particular flavour, as a side order I don’t feel as though that would be necessary.  The chips were good.  Perhaps not as crispy as I would have liked but that is most likely down to the food being delivered.  In my experience, this happens often.  The chips did however have a slightly spicy coating I believe which was nice.  The garlic bread was good, not burnt.  I am uncertain whether or not the garlic sauce and coleslaw were made in house but they tasted pretty good anyway.  The only slight disappointment was the onion rings.  Although they could have been effected in the same way as the chips I believe they may have been slightly under cooked.  This can come down to personal taste, but I do like my onion rings crispy.

Now I know that most of you will never visit Pontypool and even less of you (if any) will have the opportunity to visit Porky’s Pizzeria but… if any of you do get the opportunity, I strongly suggest that you at least try the pizza.  The pizzas are much better than those offered from the larger pizza chains and definitely better than what you would get from your local kebab shop.

If you do try one of Porky’s Pizzeria’s pizzas – Let me know.  I would be interested to hear what you though 🙂
